Mumbai Indians complete dream run with title

On a night of mediocre cricket, the Mumbai Indians kept their surprise run going to win the biggest prize, in financial terms, in non-international cricket. James Franklin was the only man to keep his head in a suicidal Mumbai innings, which helped them reach 139, but the Royal Challengers Bangalore once again choked in a final to lose despite a start of 38 for 0 in four overs.

Be that as it may, for a majority of the match the teams seemed to be in a contest for ordinary cricket. There were three run-outs, there were unsavoury slogs resulting in exposed stumps, the winning side bowled 10 out of a total of 13 wides, and MI's' keeper kept letting through byes. If Franklin's smart 41 off 29 suggested he was the only sober man in a Paris Hilton party, the Royal Challengers clearly outdid their opponents for rashness.

Dilshan's 27 until then had come off shots either through the line or through the covers, and he would have known how desperately MI would have wanted a wicket off what then seemed like a last roll of the dice. As it turned out, he swung across the line of a full first delivery, losing his off stump.

Kumar Dharmasena then made a potentially match-turning call. He had already got two lbw calls wrong in MI's innings, first reprieving Harbhajan Singh when he was plumb, then ruling him out when he wasn't. But his most consequential mistake was during the chase and again involved Harbhajan, who fired in quick offbreaks in his first over. The ball had a massive distance to travel, and the ball-tracking predicted it would have hit the outside of off stump. Conventional wisdom would have ruled it in the batsman's favour, and even Gayle lost his cool when he saw the finger come up.

With an unreliable batting order, pampered by the true Bangalore surface and short boundaries, to follow, it was down to the only survivor of the Royal Challengers' 2009 choke, Virat Kohli, to shepherd the rest through. However, he found himself batting with a trigger-happy Mayank Agarwal, who despite all his attempts at power hitting managed 14 off 19 before holing out to long-off. Even when the desperate Agarwal got out, the Royal Challengers needed a manageable 73 off 57.

Kohli felt the pinch too. Perhaps it was the presence of Malinga in the end, perhaps it was just the shock of having to work hard for runs after the flat Bangalore pitch, but even he didn't show the willingness to take the game to the deep end. In the next over he holed out to deep midwicket. Everybody knew it was game over there and then.

The rest were just a blurry procession of catching and stumping practice, a complete contrast to how Franklin managed a strike-rate of close to 150 without a shot hit in anger. There was no dearth of madness around him either. Sarul Kanwar first ran Aiden Bliazzard out before slogging around a full delivery. Ambati Rayudu struggled to find singles in the middle, and a positive 40-run stand with Suryakumar Yadav ended with a run-out.

Franklin ensured the trend continued, hesitating during a second run to complete the third run-out. Kieron Pollard's massive leading edge travelled as far as long-off, and MI were in a tailspin after looking good for a repeat of their 160 from the semi-final. Although it didn't look enough at the moment, Malinga's two sixes in the end turned out to be surplus.

Both teams were fined for slow over-rates. Harbhajan, the MI captain, was fined US$3,000 and each MI player $1,500 for being two overs behind the required over-rate. The Royal Challengers players were fined $750 and their captain Vettori $1,500 for being one over behind the required rate

Trott is happy to see his batting at Hyderabad

For a player who is ICC Cricketer of the Year and has hit heady heights with his run-scoring, Jonathan Trott still has to cope with plenty of questions being asked about his place especially in the one-day game. However, unsurprisingly for a man whose key trait is the single-mindedness he brings to his batting, Trott isn't getting worked up by thoughts of having to fight for his England berth.

For an older guy of the team it's a good thing to see that strength in depth," he said. "It spurs you on to try to push yourself and become even better.

"You've got to go about it the best way you think you can contribute to the team," he added. "That's all I try to do, the only thing I really think about when I go out in the middle. Sometimes you get it wrong, play the wrong shot, but it's always while you're trying to do your best for your team-mates. I think everyone's got that mentality and that's why we've been pretty successful over the last few years."

There is stiff competition for batting places in the England line-up following Bairstow's recent performances, including the 53-ball hundred on Tuesday, and it could be that Ian Bell, their most impressive Test batsman during the home season, misses out for the first one-day international. Kevin Pietersen is back in the one-day se, although he failed in both warm-up matches while Ravi Bopara has enjoyed a consistent run.

"It's not a case of looking over your shoulder. You can't go very far forward if you're looking over your shoulder the whole time. I don't think that's a very good mentality to have, worrying about your own place.

Ganguly offered BCCI technical panel chairmanship

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly was Monday offered the chairmanship of the technical committee of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

BCCI's newly appointed president N.Srinivasan, after Annual General Meeting (AGM), said that Gavaskar, also a former captain, has written to the BCCI to be relieved from the post.

"Gavaskar has written to us that he has been on the technical committee for seven years, and it's time that we search for a fresh face. It is our intention to appoint Sourav Ganguly as the chairman of the technical committee.

On the appointment of Mohinder Amarnath from the North Zone, Srinivasan said: "I don't think anybody would dispute his qualification to be in the selection committee."

Srinivasan also made it clear that the BCCI would not use the Decision Review System (DRS) in its current form since it is unacceptable to the cricket board. He said the BCCI would raise the issue in the upcoming ICC meetings.

"Initially, we were reluctant to use the DRS as we didn't have faith in Ball Tracking technology. After the current series, it has been evident that even Hot Spot is not fully accurate," said Srinivisan.

"We have decided not to use DRS in its current form. The outgoing president Sashank Manohar had raised this issue at the earlier ICC meetings, and I will also raise the issue in future meetings," Srinivasan said

PCB wants formal discussions with BCCI Indo-Pak cricket ties

Lahore, Sept 20 : The Pakistan Cricket Board has said that the proposed bilateral series between Pakistan and India is “in the air”, and that it does not expect any progress until the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) holds a formal meeting with the PCB.

He said that the PCB wants the resumption of cricket ties with India ‘as soon as possible,’ but added that the BCCI has to compensate its Pakistani counterpart for the cancelled 2009 tour.

“Our line is very clear even now, we want resumption of bilateral cricket ties with India as soon as possible. But obviously we also have in mind that India has to compensate us for the FTP tour they didn’t undertake in early 2009,” Ahmad said.

Ideally, the BCCI could compensate for the cancelled series in 2009 by playing some extra games, the PCB official said.

“We are not laying any conditions, but these are issues that need to be discussed properly. Then there is the issue of government clearances as well. So lot of work needs to be done, but as yet no formal discussions have taken place between the two boards,” he added.

Live streeming of Sri Lanka vs Australia, 3rd Test Match

Match Highlights
DAY, 4: STUMPS - Australia: 316 - 209 / 3 in 68.0 overs RR: 3.07, Sri Lanka: 473 in 174.0 overs RR: 2.72

Hughes leads Oz to safety

After limiting the lead to 157, Australia led by Phillip Hughes batted well to be 209 for 3 at the end of day four at SSC, the opener unbeaten on 122.Though, Herath bowled his heart out, picked up all the three Australian wickets to fall but lacked support from the other bowlers to make any more inroads. The hosts, in front by 52 would bank on the centurion to see them through on the last day.

Sri Lanka trailing 1-0 in the series needed to get quick wickets upfront to brighten the chances of a result but the Australian openers added 62 in less than 12 overs. Both the openers targeted the new ball knowing that the scoring may become little difficult after the spinners come into the attack. Nine boundaries had been scored in the first eleven overs when Herath was handed over the ball.

Hughes, starting the innings on a pair, looked in good knick particularly while driving through the covers. He greeted Herath with a slog sweep over cow-corner for a six but the bowler managed to get a breakthrough in the same over as Watson was hit on the front foot by a delivery that was going straight. Even though, the on-field umpire adjudged it not-out, Sri Lanka got it overturned through a review. Nevertheless, the 62 run opening partnership had laid a solid foundation.

After behaving well for the first three days, the SSC pitch was showing signs of wear and tear which was exploited by Herath. While maintaining a good length, the left hander targeted the rough outside Hughes’ off-stump but the batsman countered it by attacking anything pitched up. He got to his fifty in 67 deliveries with a slog swept four off Dilshan.

At the other end, Australia’s new no. 3 Shaun Marsh, unlike two of his previous innings looked in bit of discomfort, scoring 18 runs after facing 56 deliveries. He was eventually caught close-in even though, replays suggested that the ball had not touched the glove but the batsmen strangely did not ask for the review. His wicket at the stroke of Tea with the score at 122 did lift the hosts but they needed few more in the last session to make a match of it.

However, Hughes was one determined Aussie not to let Sri Lanka have any space in the game. He was rock solid while dispatching anything that was marginally off line. However, there were a few nervous moments in the nineties. A glance down to fine leg boundary helped him to 97, a strange shot almost cost him three figures on 99 but the opener finally brought up his third century in Tests with a nudge through point. Meanwhile, Ponting who had replaced Marsh too played second fiddle to Hughes letting the left hander dictate terms. Still, he hit a couple of those trademark full-stretch cover drives during the 66-run partnership with Hughes that put Australia in lead.

Of all the Sri Lankan bowlers, Herath threatened the most with a nagging line coupled with some assistance from the track. After snaring Watson and Marsh, he was the one to remove Ponting with a stinging delivery that beat the batsman’s defensive prod to take the gloves enroute to Mahela at slip, the former captain dismissed for a 80-ball 28. Ponting’s dismissal did revive Sri Lankan hopes but Hughes dropped anchor after the century to take Australia to 209 for 3, the overall lead pegged at 52. He was unbeaten on 122 and with him Michael Clarke on 8 when the stumps were draw.

Earlier, Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews finally overcame the nervous nineties syndrome to score his maiden test ton that played a major role in his team securing a healthy first innings lead of 157. The home team lost four of its remaining wickets for just 45 runs facing 19 overs and eventually bowled out for 473.

Like his previous bouts while approaching the elusive hundred, Mathews had some nervous moments as Australia claimed wickets regularly and it needed number eleven Suranga Lakmal’s defiant support that helped him to the feat. Aussie skipper Michael Clarke spreading the field didn’t help either as his anxiety to get there was palpable on his face ever so vividly. Though, the wait ended when Mathews blasted a cover drive 256th ball of his innings off Peter Siddle to bring wild and passionate celebrations from the all-rounder. His hundred brought an end to a streak of dismissals Angelo had experienced in nineties in the past.

Siddle was the bowler who did the work for the visitors. The paceman castled overnight unbeaten batsman Shaminda Eranga and then caught Rangana Herath plumb infront to dent Lankan’s endeavour to score fast. Chanaka Welegedara was run-out and Lakmal was clean bowled by Mitchell Johnson to wrap up the innings. Mathews remained unbeaten on 105 that came off 269 balls including ten hits to the fence.

Champions League matches likely to be shifted from Eden Gardens

Kolkata, Sep 20 : Eden Gardens is set to lose all its three Champions League Twenty20 matches with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) favouring shift of the matches due to monsoon rains lashing the city almost daily.

"When the conditions are such, how can we host the matches? We need time to prepare the track. Who will gain if we organise the matches and not a ball can be bowled?" said a CAB official.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), however, left the decision to the CAB.

A teleconference was held between CAB officials and their counterparts in the BCCI on the matches late Monday, where the local association pointed out the forecast of rains in the coming days.

However, the final decision in this regard will be announced Tuesday.

Eden Gardens was slated to host two matches -- Sep 25 and Sep 27.

If Eden backs out finally, then the matches are likely to be shifted to Hyderabad.

England is now looking to dominate in one day format also

England fast bowler Tim Bresnan has sounded a warning to India saying that they will come hard at them in the upcoming one-day series. England, according to Bresnan, want to inflict another whitewash on the World Champions.

India will go into the five-match ODI series, starting September 3, without five of their World Cup heroes due to injuries.

Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan have all been ruled out of ODI action and Gautam Gambhir is also likely to miss the series due to concussion.

If we come out with confidence against India, we should get the result we're after. We sustained the assault during the Test matches and we'll be looking to do the same in the one-dayers," Bresnan said.

"India are a top side and we have to respect them in all forms, - especially the shorter ones. But we're out to win every game, that's our mentality," Bresnan was quoted

Gambhir likely to miss ODI's in England

With little improvement in his agonising condition over the last 10 days, Indian opener Gautam Gambhir could be packing his bags to return home.

India were whitewashed 4-0 in the Test series, lost their number one Test ranking and are in danger of suffering a similar debilitating fate in the one-day series, starting with the first game in Chester-le-Street on September 3.

Since then, he has visited doctors and got MRI scans done which have shown clean results, yet Gambhir's condition hasn't improved.

Gambhir's case could be similar to the one suffered by South African fast bowler Dale Steyn during the Champions League last year when he too had backpedalled to take a catch offered by Michael Hussey in the semifinal clash between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore and fell on his head.

Steyn's MRI scans too showed little but the paceman took 3-4 weeks to get himself sorted out.

By the looks of it, Gambhir could also suffer a similar fate and could be out of action for 3-4 weeks, putting in doubt even his participation when England pay a return visit to India for a one-day series in early October.

India vs England live test match

Check the above links to go for live cricket match INDIA VS ENGLAND.

It is turning out to be quite interesting with the guest scalping 4 wickets and boxing the hosts. It has become live. India vs England test series 2011 day 4 has become very exciting. England have lost four wickets for just 54 runs.

Cook was looking uncomfortable and he lost his wicket on a very easy ball that was slow and didn’t have much pace. But following that single dismissal, things don’t look rosy for India. The English bowlers are using the home advantage to the fullest and scoring runs at a frantic pace. So far they have showed completely that though India can be number one team on paper they are certainly the more formidable team in all aspects of the game.

So the Indian team is making a good comeback. If the bundle the English team out for around 350 runs to chase, they may think of drawing the match. In otherwise match the game may be all but over for the team India.

Hey guys! Is it daydreaming or am I right. Ishant Sharma has taken another wicket in the same over. He bowled a maiden over and took two wickets, first on the very first ball of the over and then on the last ball of the over.

Ganguly was the second highest run scorer in Tests in 2007

he chopping and changing under Chappell was so much that Ganguly found himself back in the team for the tour against SA. He proved his mettle with a composed fifty to help India to its first Test win in SA. This proved to be the start of a second honeymoon for Dada.

historic win against England in the 2002

Ganguly had always fought for the team he wanted. He went to great lengths in backing the youngsters. It paid off superbly when Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh scripted a historic win against England in the 2002 Natwest series final. In characteristic fashion, Ganguly had shown them the way with an aggressive 60 that set up the chase.

Geoffrey Boycott says India can't stop England from being No1

Former England captain Geoffrey Boycott does not foresee world number one India bouncing back in the ongoing Test series against England and believes the hosts are well on their way to clinch the top spot in ICC Rankings.

"The hosts are all fired up. Confidence is high, they believe they can beat India and they are hungry to be No.1 in the world. I can't see India stopping them and it would be an amazing turnaround if they beat England," Boycott said.

Boycott feels the Indian bowling attack, which was ripped apart by the English before the hosts won by 196 runs in the Lord's Test, lacks the zing to worry England.

Zaheer Khan is a quality bowler but even before the series started I never expected him to survive four Test matches in five weeks. His ability has never been in doubt but his fitness has always been a worry.

Harbhajan Singh may have 400 Test-match wickets but all the England batsmen played him with ease at Lord's. I think he is too slow through the air.

The former batsman feels it will be a challenge for India to survive the hostile bowling attack of England.

I know the Indian batting had problems with Sachin Tendulkar weighed down by the weight of expectation at Lord's and a viral infection in the second innings," Boycott said.

The 70-year-old also had a lot of good things to say about England's pace trio of James Anderson, Chris Tremlett and Stuart Broad.

James Anderson is now a top-class bowler. His movement of the ball is his key strength. If you keep swinging and seaming at a pretty good pace, and put it in difficult areas for batsmen often enough, you will get wickets, and that is what he does.

At Lord's, Stuart Broad was unrecognisable from the guy who bowled all over the place against Sri Lanka. The key at Lord's was that he bowled with pace and pitched it up around off stump," he added.

The great thing for England is they have two good back-up seamers queuing up to come into the team.
