STORY BEHIND GANGULY EXCLUSION FROM KOCHI

New Delhi: Former India and Kolkata Kinght Riders skipper Sourav Ganguly may have lost a realistic chance of playing in this year's Indian Premier League, according to the IPL rule book.

It was learnt on Friday that the Kochi Tuskers Kerala had made an attempt to rope in Ganguly as a replacement player for Steve Smith. Having been ignored at the IPL-4 auction in January in Bangalore, the only way Ganguly could have come into the IPL was as a replacement player.

With Smith pulling out of injury, Kochi wanted Ganguly as his replacement but the rule book states that, a player can be replaced at the same or lesser price than the player to be replaced. Smith was purchased by Kochi for $200,000 while Ganguly's base price was $400,000.

Surprisingly, Ganguly's base price, initially, was $200,000. But former Indian skipper, along with a few other players, including Rahul Dravid, had increased it to $400,000.

If he had not done that, Ganguly could easily have walked into the Kochi team and fulfilled his dream of playing in the IPL-4.

Viv Richards told Sachin is greatest batsman in the world

Batting legend Viv Richards has not seen Sir Donald Bradman but of all those he has seen, including compatriot Brian Lara, none has been better than iconic Indian Sachin Tendulkar.

"I didn't see Don but to me, in all my years associated with the game, I haven't seen a better batsman than Sachin Tendulkar," said Richards in a eulogy to the "little man", who openly professes to have idolised him while growing up.

"If there is a better batsman than Sachin, then he hasn't arrived yet."

In one stroke, Richards put Tendulkar in a pedestal above his contemporaries such as Brian Lara, Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis and even to the legends such as Sunil Gavaskar and Javed Miandad of his era.

As for Bradman, his career lasted 20 years including a few years disrupted by Second World War. Tendulkar is already in his 22nd year of international cricket. Bradman scored 29 centuries in 52 Tests.

Tendulkar has a total of 99 international centuries across various formats so far.

"To me the most remarkable thing about Tendulkar is how he has completed the full cycle of his cricketing career overcoming pain, agony, failures, fatigue, injuries and yet continuing relentlessly till the point the circle was complete.

"He is the most complete package, the cricketer I respect more than anyone else."

Richards defended Tendulkar's decision to skip the complete West Indies tour.

"He is 37 and not getting any younger. You have got to respect him for his decision," said Richards as he turned up for a Johnny Walker promotional event at Queen's Park Oval on Thursday afternoon.

"He has done enough to decide what is best for him. He knows his commitments and the approach he must take for the rest of his career."

But that doesn't stop Richards from lamenting how much Tendulkar's presence could have done to inspire the young cricketers of the Caribbean.

"It would have been fantastic for the young boys to just watch him in action - how he prepares his innings, the way he goes about building his knock, overcoming conditions and opponents.

"It could have been an invaluable experience for our young batsmen."

Richards said he feels humbled by the respect and love he still generates within the cricket community of India.

"The other day, I was on a flight to London and Gambhir was with me. I was really touched by his curiosity and the keenness he had to know about batting. It's passion such as this which sets men like him apart. I was really impressed," he said.

It is ironical though that West Indies Cricket Board isn't quite inclined to take advantage of their own legend to improve the standard of cricket in the Caribbean.

"It's a fragile environment. Only strong leaders can accept independent men," said Richards

No UDRS for IND vs WI tour

The controversial Umpire Decision Review System will not be used in the forthcoming series between India and the West Indies after the BCCI convinced its Caribbean counterparts against the use of technology for the entire tour.

The implementation of UDRS in a bilateral series is the prerogative of the home board but the powerful BCCI, which has opposed the system from the onset, has forced the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) to do away with it in the series, which starts with a T20 International here on Saturday.

A WICB spokesperson confirmed that UDRS will not be used in the one-off Twenty20 match, five ODIs or for that matter in the three Test matches.

Incidentally, UDRS was used when Pakistan toured the Caribbean recently.

India has been a staunch critic of UDRS ever since Sachin Tendulkar went public with his disapproval of the system in Sri Lanka a couple of years ago.

Just before the World Cup, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni too gave his thumbs down to the system.

"I don't support the UDRS as you have two gentlemen standing as umpires on the field, who are professionals. They also have the support of the third umpire. Referral system, I personally believe is not a cent per cent thing. I am not going to buy a life jacket that doesn't come with a warranty," he had said.

The last straw for India, perhaps, was the World Cup league match against England in Bangalore.

In the 25th over of the England innings, Dhoni sought the help of UDRS when on-field umpire turned down an lbw appeal against Ian Bell off Yuvraj Singh.

The technology clearly showed that Bell was out as the ball was going to hit the middle stump but the third umpire ruled in favour of the batsman because the distance between the wicket and point of impact was more than 2.5 metres.

We are happy that Gayle is not playing

Indian captain Suresh Raina on Saturday expressed relief that Chris Gayle would be missing at least the first three games of the present limited overs series against his team.

"To be honest yes (I'm relieved)," Raina remarked on the eve of the Twenty20 match which opens the six-week tour against the West Indies here tomorrow.

Gayle took the recent IPL by storm. The West Indian was the highest scorer (608 runs) with a strike rate in excess of 183 for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Raina remarked there is enough for his boys to be motivated to do well in the present series.

"There is no short of motivation now that we have a reputation to defend, we are the world champions."

I am hitting the ball well and learning all the time in the company of Stephen Fleming, Gary Kirsten and now Duncan Fletcher." Incidentally, all the three were left-handers during their careers.

Indian coach Duncan Fletcher is excited by the Indian team's talent, which he had a chance to see first hand as a consultant to New Zealand side last winter.

He also realises the challenge confronting him, not the least because different approach would be required while dealing with seniors vis-a-vis juniors.

"I was consultant to New Zealand (last winter) and just watching those young Indian players was very exciting.

These young players have the calibre, they have been exposed early to top class cricket. They look very positive," he said.

"Dealing juniors and seniors present different scenarios. Each player needs different handling. Personally for me, it's difficult to keep up with the standards they have set. Yet there is scope to get better and improve."

Fletcher seems to not consider the volume of cricket played in the negative light.

"With the volume there is also a bigger pool of cricketers. It is a reality and you need to adjust to the present demands."

West Indian captain Darren Sammy said his side was equally motivated to do well.

"They are the best side of the world and you are motivated to do well against them. I haven't performed as I would have liked to but I want to give off my best."

Sammy was not worried about the comments in the Caribbean that he did not quite deserve his place in the squad.

World cup photos

It was a feeling I had never experienced for 25 years 1 month and 29 days when I woke up this morning. No, it wasn't the drinks last night that left my head buzzing, India had lifted the coveted World Cup trophy for the first time since 1983 and I was proud I had played my part. Yes!

Though I have witnessed and for my part done numerous crazy things to ensure India wins, the World Cup and especially the final on Saturday made me realize how true 'team aise nahi jeeth thi, uskho jeethana padtha hai' was.

A colleague of mine left his desk and sat beside me for most part of the match - calm, unflustered, confident! "How are you so calm?" I asked him. He said, "My nerves are jangling inside man, but I don't want to jinx it (the Gambhir-Dhoni stand) by moving." Any questions I asked thereafter was addressed to with a similar set of words. "Don't you have work to do? "I don't want to jinx it" "Wanna go out for a break?" "No, I don't want to jinx it" "OK move, I have to take a leak" "DON'T jinx it." The guy was twice my size, no point arguing, I had to hold on.

Forget the thousands of fans in the stadium - the 12th man for Team India, forget the 11 players slogging (if Munaf and Nehra's efforts also qualify as slogging) it out in the middle, forget Kirsten and the support staff; would Team India have triumphed without the fan who is outside the stadium? The fan who is doing everything in his capacity to take us closer to victory?

I don't think so! Everyone has played their part in India's victory - from the selfless model who promised a treat for the eye if India won to temples offering special prayers for their team to win; from stars descending upon the stadium to cheer their team to the common man risking robbery, heartache and getting fired to ensure he doesn't miss a second of the game.

Some choose to not watch the match, others offer humongous bribes to god, movie stars vow to give up eating even if it was a shameless attempt to promote a movie. Every Indian prayed for a miracle ending. "He's served India well for far too long; surely it will be a deserved prize for Sachin to win" "Forget Sachin, India should win cos it's at home."

"Cricket is a religion here, and we have God. India has to win." There are also others who make plans keeping the match in mind - 'if we win we drink, if we lose we drink'. There are a million different things people do just to make sure India wins.

World cup 2011 winning movement

In a country bustling with life with so many diverse religions, backgrounds and people there was a togetherness that the freedom fighters would be proud of, when Sachin was out there was a silence that school teachers would die for during their classes and when India won there was a cheer that echoed all over our 3,287,263 square kilometers landscape.

My usually busy bosses were all sitting together watching the game, cheering every run and offering advice to the players on how to play. It was a day when productivity, growth, profit et al didn't matter; it was only about India winning.

I read in a book that, "Cricket is a way of life in the sub continent; it consumes a disproportionate amount of people's time and energy for a normal sport." Well, Cricket is no normal sport. It is the driving force behind unity in this country (and between countries), it is perhaps the only occasion

when a person breaks the shackles his boss or wife has on him to get a glimpse of his team winning, it is an opportunity for everyone to forget everything and become a fan. For us in India, cricket is life

This World Cup belongs to every Indian as much as it does to the Men in Blue. With India's jam packed schedule this year, it won't be long before the fans don their roles again.

For everyone has a very specific role when India plays; it might mean not watching the game, it might mean sitting in the same position all day, it might mean going to a fancy bar and forgetting what you were there for or for a lucky few it might mean commanding others to do what they should actually be doing (my colleagues) but it is a role played to perfection by most and the it was the efforts of more than a billion people that made April 02, 2011 possible.
